
Matthew Coetzee
Associate, Litigation and Commercial
Matthew is an Associate in our Litigation and Corporate Commercial departments.
He specialises in both High Court and Magistrates’ Court litigation in various jurisdictions and has appeared in specialised Courts and Tribunals such as the Financial Services Tribunal and Equality Court.
Matthew has gained experience representing individuals as well as State Organs in the fields of Administrative Law, Regulatory Law and Public Law. Due to his interest and experience in Labour Law and Commercial Litigation, he is expanding his practice at DML to include these areas of the law. As a Notary Public, Matthew has extensive experience in the drafting and registration of Antenuptial Contracts, Servitudes and the Cession of Exclusive Use Areas.
Matthew values organization and preparation in representing clients and ensuring their interests are protected and that favourable results are delivered. He is solution driven and keen to always find a workable answer for his clients.
Matthew is currently an executive committee member of the Cape Town Attorneys Association and is on the High Court and Magistrates’ Court sub-committee.
Background
Matthew joined DML in April 2026, and practices as an Associate and Notary Public. He obtained his LLB from the University of Cape Town and his LLM from the University of the Western Cape. Matthew completed his articles at a large Cape Town law firm and then moved to practise for six years at another respected local law firm before joining DML.
Outside of the office, Matthew enjoys the outdoors and nature. He is a keen cyclist who looks forward to cycling socially and competing in races.
